FROM THE ARTISTS

An intermission is a temporary state.

A pause between two moments. An anti-moment.

The intermission is the tension between before and after.

Edward Hopper, the author of the images we created, gave us intermissions. Our images imply that his characters came from one place and are going to another but give no clues as to what those places are. You fill in the blanks. Where some will see loneliness, others will see intimacy. Nighthawks for example, has been described as both “serene” and “eerie.” Being opposites, neither can be right; but neither is wrong. These are subjective images, their interpretation is a deeply personal experience. There are as many valid meanings as there are viewers.

Hopper has been described as a bad painter but a great artist.

The former we fixed, the latter we honour.
